Charles Glass llegó a Sudáfrica en los finales del siglo XIX durante la fiebre del oro. Conoció a un hombre llamado a Marshall m.p. quien le interesó en la elaboración de cerveza. Creó una cervecería en Johannesburgo. Allí se encontró con que los mineros estaban más acostumbrados a beber hard tack, un destilado de patata cruda mezclada con jugo de tabaco y pimienta, que era muy barato.
